Complaints about Dorset Council continue to rise \u2013 up by 14% year on year \u2013 and double when compared to the year before.<\/p>\n
The latest figures show 1,400 complaints across all areas of the council in 2021-22 \u2013 although only 554 of these were fully considered formally, with 862 resolved informally.<\/p>\n
Fifteen of the 20 more detailed cases which were upheld by the Local Government Ombudsman involved adults or children\u2019s social services with a total of \u00a342,300 awarded in financial remedie: six of these over delays in the assessment of children or young people with special educational needs.<\/p>\n
A report to councillors says that the total amounts awarded represent a steep rise from \u00a36,750 in 20-21 and \u00a31,800 in 19-20, although many of the Special Education Need cases date back several years, having only just found their way into the formal complaints process.<\/p>\n
The report says that overall only 8% of the total complaints made were considered fully justified with 9% partly justified, a similar percentage to the previous year.<\/p>\n
Dorset Council says it seeks to learn from complaints and recorded 127 \u2018learning points\u2019 in the year, a 13per cent increase, which is says is proportionate to the increase in complaint numbers.<\/p>\n
The authority has also recorded 380 expressions of thanks across its various directorates, down when compared to the previous Covid year.<\/p>\n
Said the report: \u201cthis is still something for Dorset Council to celebrate and hopefully presents a more balanced report on service perceptions. It is clear in 2021-22 that people were more likely to voice complaints, than compliment a job well done.\u201d<\/p>\n
Also up were the number of complaints about the conduct of Dorset councillors, both at unitary council level and town and parishes. These rose by 11 per cent to sixty \u2013 although only five were investigated and none upheld at the time the report was compiled.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn line with our approach to other complaints, we will look in the future to how we can learn from complaints about councillors as part of promoting high standards of conduct,\u201d said senior assurance officer for complaints, Antony Bygrave.<\/p>\n
In addition to the financial payments where the Ombudsman found fault with the council the authority spent \u00a35,700 during the year on independent investigators for the more complex cases involving children\u2019s services, up from \u00a34,300 in the previous year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
